I grew up as a kid in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 80’s. It was a Golden Era. As soon as I got my hands on a VHS Camera (weighting roughly 87 lbs) I began making Short Films, Music Videos, and Skateboard Videos. I felt compelled to create something… anything to get out all that God had poured into me. My freshman year in college, I began to volunteer with the Middle School Ministry at the church I had grown up in. In fact, the first time I ever taught there (to a captive audience of 13 kids) I made my own “Man on the Street” video complete with R.E.M.’s “I Am Superman” as the soundtrack. No one asked me to do it… I just kinda had to. I loved serving and leading in that ministry.
That’s when I sensed a clear calling from God to pursue vocational ministry.
It was also during this time that I met the most fascinating girl from Chicago. While visiting a College in Downtown Chi Town, I met Jeanne and instantly fell in love with her. After a couple days of spending time with her, I wrote her a letter that changed our lives forever. We began dating long distance until I eventually moved to Chicago to marry her.
Eventually, God led me from California to the heart of the downtown Chicago to finish College … and to finally be in the same state as my fiancé, Jeanne. It was during this time that we began volunteering at Student Impact, the High School Ministry of Willow Creek Community Church in the suburbs of Chicago.
Jeanne was quickly hired there, and within a year (after finishing college) I joined the staff as well. While at Willow, God greatly grew my gift of Teaching. I was privileged to be the Teaching Pastor of Axis (a 20 Something Ministry Willow). I also had the privilege to be a Teaching Pastor for the Midweek and Weekend services at Willow. Every weekend I had the incredible opportunity to connect the dots between ordinary folks and an extraordinary God. I am so grateful for this season.
We served at Willow for 11 amazing years (1995-2006) … but in the summer of 2005 we sensed God was leading us to the next great faith adventure. So we packed up our lives, our 9-month-old son, Elijah, and our 3-year-old Yellow Lab, Molly, and moved to Atlanta
After several years of friendship and ministry partnership, I joined the team at North Point Community Church in the suburbs of Atlanta as the Singles Director and leader of 7|22 (a weekly gathering of singles and young professionals). Again, each week I had the privilege of connecting the dots through my teaching and writing. During this time, my first book, The Deity Formerly Known as God, came out, and I had the privilege of writing a regular series of articles for Christianity Today’s Ignite Magazine. Jeanne and I built our dream home there and brought our baby girl, Gigi, home from the hospital to it.
We planned to be there for a very long time… God had other plans… bigger plans…better plans.
While in Atlanta, God gave Jeanne and I a vision for a church committed to the City and to the transformation of people’s Souls. A church that was committed to leading people into a transforming relationship with Jesus. A church that made the Spiritual as Practical as possible. A church… in Chicago. We started Soul City Church in our living room… in Atlanta. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. Compelled by God, we moved our lives from the ATL to the CHI in the spring of 2010. We lived in one of Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods, Humboldt Park.
We gathered for 6 months in our living room and spent our weekdays renovating 22,000 square feet of warehouse space in the heart of Chicago’s West Loop that had been given to our Church rent free! On November 7, 2010, Soul City Church opened its doors to Chicago. It has been an unbelievable faith journey. We can’t believe how God has grown us and grown our church. We are in a perpetual state of Awe, and the only thing we can say is, “Only God.”
